Michael Camerano — Direct
921 lines(Whereupon, there was a sidebar conference as follows:)
MR. LALLY: With this witness, what I intend to do, and I just wanted to check with the Court, as to how you wanted me to do this.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: So a couple of different exhibits that I intend to introduce through him. The first would be essentially the text or chat long history of John O'Keefe of which he's a participant in at least one of those conversations.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: So I would be looking to introduce that as an exhibit, as well as the copies -- video. And there is an additional Ring video which is entirely my fault, but it didn't make it onto what's been marked as an exhibit. Essentially, it's No. 148 from our count. It's when he leaves. Mr. Camerano moves his vehicle in the top right of the driveway and Mr. O'Keefe then moves his vehicle over to the top left of the driveway. But it's not on what's marked as Exhibit 5. I have a separate disk with the video on it. I just need to mark it as an exhibit, as well. So my question is do you want me to -- I know you want to see videos and things of that nature. Do you want me to just mark it as an exhibit as I go or do you want me to approach each time --
JUDGE CANNONE: You've seen the exhibit? Who is doing this?
MR. YANNETTI: I am.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay. So there is no question that it's coming into evidence?
MR. YANNETTI: No.
JUDGE CANNONE: So you can play it. How long is it?
MR. LALLY: So I'm only playing just a few different portions. I might play different portions of different witnesses. But, for Mr. Camerano's purposes, it's really just a couple- minute clip here, a couple-minute clip there.
JUDGE CANNONE: All right. Do you intend to use it, as well?
MR. YANNETTI: I do.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. YANNETTI: One additional question, Your Honor, just for guidance. I noticed during Mr. Lally's direct of this past witness he displayed multiple videos onto the screen without first asking permission of the Court. The Court had --
JUDGE CANNONE: He asked for permission yesterday to do that.
MR. YANNETTI: Okay. Yes. But my understanding was that we had to ask permission every time we wanted to put something on. Mr. Jackson yesterday was looking to display exhibits which were already in evidence, and the Court berated us for that.
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes. Well, because you just went back and said, put on the this, put on the screen that.
MR. YANNETTI: In fact, that's what Mr. Lally just did. And I'm not quibbling, Your Honor. I'm just asking what are the rules. That's all.
JUDGE CANNONE: Well, he at least stops it with, you know, Ms. Gilman, could you play. But I thought you asked -- let me know in advance if you intend to use them.
MR. JACKSON: I'm going to ask permission every single time --
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay. Then you'll ask permission every time too.
MR. JACKSON: I'm not even asking that he do it.
JUDGE CANNONE: No.
MR. JACKSON: But you --
JUDGE CANNONE: So yesterday it was just sort of out of the blue, put up No. 24, put up No. 26, like that.
MR. JACKSON: Your Honor, I did yesterday exactly what Mr. Lally did today and I think it's compliant. However, given the Court's upgrading of me yesterday, I am going to ask permission every single time.
JUDGE CANNONE: And you'll have to do it.
MR. LALLY: I understand.
JUDGE CANNONE: All right.
(Whereupon, the sidebar conference concluded.)
Whereupon, MICHAEL CAMERANO having been first duly sworn, was examined and testified as follows:
JUDGE CANNONE: Whenever you’re ready, Mr. Lally.
MR. LALLY: Thank you.
DIRECT EXAMINATION BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Good morning, sir.
MR. CAMERANO: Good morning.

MR. CAMERANO: Michael Camerano, C-A-M-E-R-A-N-O.
MR. LALLY: And where do you live, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: in Canton.
JUDGE CANNONE: I’m going to ask you to keep your voice up, Mr. Camerano.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, sir, if you want, that microphone is adjustable, so you can move it around to whatever it comfortable; okay?
MR. CAMERANO: Uh-hmm.
MR. LALLY: And how long have you lived in Canton?
MR. CAMERANO: Eighteen years.
MR. LALLY: And that residence you live at, who, if anyone, do you live there with?
MR. CAMERANO: My wife and two children.
MR. LALLY: And what’s your wife’s name?
MR. CAMERANO: Katherine.
MR. LALLY: And how old are your two children?
MR. CAMERANO: Sixteen and thirteen.
MR. LALLY: And the 16-year-old, is that a boy or a girl?
MR. CAMERANO: Girl.
MR. LALLY: And your other child, is that a boy or a girl?
MR. CAMERANO: Boy.
MR. LALLY: Now, your wife, how long have the two of you been married?
MR. CAMERANO: Twenty-five years.
MR. LALLY: And do you work, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: What is it that you do for work?
MR. CAMERANO: Laborer’s Union.
MR. LALLY: And does you wife work as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And what does she do?
MR. CAMERANO: She’s a nurse.
MR. LALLY: And, sir, if I could turn your attention to January 28th, 2022, do you recall that date, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And were you working that day?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall what day of the week that was?
MR. CAMERANO: Friday.
MR. LALLY: And following work, what did you do after work?
MR. CAMERANO: I went home, did some stuff with the kids.
MR. LALLY: And, during the time that you were home, who, if anyone, did you speak with, either via phone, text?
MR. CAMERANO: I was talking to John O’Keefe.
MR. LALLY: And, with regard to John O’Keefe, how did you know John O’Keefe?
MR. CAMERANO: I met John seven years ago.
MR. LALLY: And how was it that the two you met?
MR. CAMERANO: We met through mutual friends. Then our kids became very friendly.
MR. LALLY: And the mutual friends through whom you met, who are they?
MR. CAMERANO: The Robertses.
MR. LALLY: And what are their first names?
MR. CAMERANO: Curt and Kerry.
MR. LALLY: And starting with Curt Roberts, how do you know Curt Roberts?
MR. CAMERANO: I grew up with Curt.
MR. LALLY: Where did the two you grow up?
MR. CAMERANO: Milton.
MR. LALLY: So you’ve known Curt Roberts most of your life; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And you mentioned that -- so you have two children. How many children did Mr. O’Keefe have?
MR. CAMERANO: Two.
MR. LALLY: And those two children, as far as their ages and genders, what were they in relation to your two children?
MR. CAMERANO: Same.
MR. LALLY: So 16-year-old girl --
MR. CAMERANO: -- 13-year-old --
MR. LALLY: -- 13-year-old boy. And were each of your two children friends with Mr. O’Keefe’s niece and nephew?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Now, as far as friends were concerned, starting with your children and Mr. O’Keefe’s niece and nephew, how close friends were they?
MR. CAMERANO: My daughter was very extremely close.
MR. LALLY: And extremely close with John’s niece --
MR. CAMERANO: (c) .
MR. LALLY: -- (c) ?
MR. CAMERANO: Yeah.
MR. LALLY: And, with reference to your son and John O’Keefe’s nephew, (c) , what was sort of the nature of their relationship?
MR. CAMERANO: They were close also.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as activities, what, if any, sort of activities did your kids do with (c) and (c) ?
MR. CAMERANO: (c) and (c) played baseball together. (c) and (c) played basketball, soccer also.
MR. LALLY: And John O’Keefe, how would you describe your relationship with John O’Keefe?
MR. CAMERANO: We were close. We did a lot of stuff together around pick up the kids, drop the kids off. We coordinated a lot of stuff together. We were friends.
MR. LALLY: And your residence versus -- you’re familiar with where Mr. O’Keefe lived; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And where did he live?
MR. CAMERANO: Meadows Ave.
MR. LALLY: And about how far away is Meadows Ave. from where you live?
MR. CAMERANO: Five minutes.
MR. LALLY: Now, with regard to the girls, and by that I mean your daughter and John O’Keefe’s niece, (c) , what, if anything, was going on with them on that particular day?
MR. CAMERANO: They both received acceptance letters to go to school.
MR. LALLY: Which school was that, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: Bishop Feehan.
MR. LALLY: Is that a private school?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: So at the time of this, in January 28th, 2022, what grade was your daughter and (c) (c) in?
MR. CAMERANO: Eighth grade.
MR. LALLY: So this would have been going into ninth grade or high school; is that right?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And what, if any, conversation did you have with Mr. O’Keefe in reference to that at some point in the afternoon?
MR. CAMERANO: We were both excited they both received acceptance letters and we wanted to get the kids together.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, may I approach?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: I’m directing your attention --
JUDGE CANNONE: Show counsel.
MR. LALLY: Oh, I’m sorry.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: I’m showing you a document. Just as far as -- specifically with reference to page, starting on page 188 of that document, if you could just look at that and look up when you’re finished?
JUDGE CANNONE: Mr. Jackson, do you want me to instruct the jury on this?
MR. JACKSON: Yes.
JUDGE CANNONE: All right. So, folks, before you consider any electronic communications in your deliberations, you must first find that it’s more likely true than not that the person who authored or sent these messages is this witness and/or John O’Keefe. If you do not find that it’s more likely true than not that the messages were sent or authored by Mr. Camerano or Mr. O’Keefe, then you may not consider the electronic communication in deciding this case. Go ahead, Mr. Lally.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, may I approach just briefly again?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Well, Mr. Camerano, do you recognize what’s depicted on that page that I just showed you?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And what do you recognize it to be?
MR. CAMERANO: Text messages.
MR. LALLY: And are those text messages that you had back and forth with Mr. O’Keefe on the day of January 28th?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, the Commonwealth would seek to introduce a book essentially as the next exhibit.
JUDGE CANNONE: Is there any objection?
MR. JACKSON: No, Your Honor.
JUDGE CANNONE: Thank you.
(Whereupon, binder with text messages was entered and marked as Exhibit No. 48 in Evidence.)
COURT REPORTER: Exhibit 48.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Mr. Camerano, I bring your attention back to page 187 of that document. Do you see anything in there listing toward participants in a text communication or conversation on the bottom of the page?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And as far as -- who are sort of listed as the participants in that conversation that comes to follow on the next page? I’m sorry, sir. Just from page 187, from the bottom --
MR. CAMERANO: My wife.
MR. LALLY: Okay. Your wife and who, if anyone else?
MR. CAMERANO: John.
MR. LALLY: And your wife, John. And is your number there as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: So, essentially, that’s a conversation between yourself; your wife, Katherine; and John O’Keefe. Correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Okay. Now, beyond sort of your memory of that, as far as the numbers that are associated with those names, do you recognize any of those numbers as being yours, your wife’s, and John O’Keefe’s?
MR. CAMERANO: No. It’s just three numbers.
MR. LALLY: Now, sir, if I could ask you to flip the page to the next one, 188.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, may Ms. Gilman publish this for the jury to read as well?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could go to page 188? Now, I’m sorry, Ms. Gilman, if you could, just --
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, sir, what’s up on the screen right now, is that what you have before you as page 188 of Exhibit 48? What’s up on the screen, is that what you have before you?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And as far as on these conversations there a blue bubbles and green bubbles; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And if you can tell us from the content or from anything else on the page before you who is communicating in the blue bubble and who is communicating in the green bubble?
MR. CAMERANO: Katie, my wife.
MR. LALLY: From within --
MR. CAMERANO: Oh, I’m communicating.
MR. LALLY: So there’s a from and a to; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, so, the sender would be the from; is that your understanding?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: So this first one on the top page, 188, this is from you; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: What, if anything, did you say in this conversation?
MR. CAMERANO: “Congrats. This is great news.”
MR. LALLY: And what, if anything, are you referring to by that?
MR. CAMERANO: getting an acceptance letter.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could just scroll down?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And the next bubble, who is that from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me. “Yes, we did.”
MR. LALLY: And if you could continue to scroll down some?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, from this bubble, who is this from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from John. “Same news, I hope.”
MR. LALLY: Was that still in reference to the news regarding Feehan?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down again?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, sir, the next bubble, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me. “Yes.”
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: The next green bubble, what, if anything, does that say and who is it from?
MR. CAMERANO: From John. “Sweet. Congrats, .”
MR. LALLY: And is that your daughter’s name?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And then if you could continue to scroll down again?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, the next bubble, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from my wife. “I’m so excited for these girls. doesn’t know yet.”
MR. LALLY: And again, Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down?
MR. LALLY: And, again, the next bubble, who is it from and what does it say, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: From J.J. “Well, I told already, so I’m sure she’s texted it by now. Poor kid is probably a nervous wreck.”
MR. LALLY: And the next bubble?
MR. CAMERANO: “I know.”
MR. LALLY: And who is that from?
MR. CAMERANO: From my wife, Katie.
MR. LALLY: And if you could scroll down again, Ms. Gilman?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And the next bubble, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: From me. “I am sure she is freaking out.”
MR. LALLY: And if you could scroll down again, please.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And the next bubble, sir, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from John. “No doubt.”
MR. LALLY: And if you could scroll down again, Mr. Gilman?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, sir, if I could --
MR. LALLY: May I approach, Your Honor, just to --
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes. Do you need the lights on?
MR. LALLY: I don’t.
JUDGE CANNONE: Mr. Camerano, are you able to see without these lights on?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes, I can.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, sir, I’m going to direct your attention to within the same exhibit page 156. And, sir, just before we get to that, on the particular day of January 28th, 2022, where was your wife that day?
MR. CAMERANO: She was at home.
MR. LALLY: And at some point did she go to work on the 28th?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And what is sort of her typical work schedule with reference to -- or at that time what was her sort of typical work schedule with reference to weekends?
MR. CAMERANO: She worked weekend nights.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as your typical schedule on Friday evenings, what, if anything, was it that you would typically do?
MR. CAMERANO: I would be with the kids. I would get them ready for stuff for the weekend, take care of all the activities that we had.
MR. LALLY: And then in reference to that as far as the weekends were concerned, Friday evenings in particular, what, if any, sort of usual thing would you do with reference to Mr. O’Keefe?
MR. CAMERANO: I would usually go over the O’Keefe’s house.
MR. LALLY: With your children; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct, or at least one of them, if not both.
MR. LALLY: So maybe your son is hanging out with or your daughter is hanging out with typically on Friday; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Now, with reference to what you have before you as page 156 of this exhibit, again towards the bottom is there an indication as to a conversation starting on the next page as far as who, if anyone, the participants are?
MR. CAMERANO: What are you asking?
MR. LALLY: May I approach, Your Honor?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: What I want to direct your attention to is the bottom of page 156 here. As far as that box at the bottom, what, if anything, does that indicate as far as the participants in the conversation that continues or begins on the next page?
MR. CAMERANO: Myself and John.
MR. LALLY: And, sir, if I could ask you to flip the page over to page 157.
MR. LALLY: And, Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, could I publish this part of the conversation for the jury?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes. There’s no objection; is there?
MR. JACKSON: No objection.
MR. LALLY: And, Your Honor, for the record, we’re going from 156 to page 159.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, so, Mr. Camerano, again, what’s up on the screen, is that what you have before you as page 157?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, so, you can look at either. Whether it’s the book in front of you or if it’s easier to see the screen, either is fine. But with reference to what’s up on the screen, that first bubble, if you could indicate to the jury again who it’s from and what it says.
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from J.J. “Hi to Caira, too, by the way.”
MR. LALLY: And who is Caira?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t know.
MR. LALLY: Okay. Fair enough. Now, with reference --
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And the next bubble again -- I’m sorry.
MR. JACKSON: Your Honor --
JUDGE CANNONE: Take the screen down, please, Mr. Lally. Turn on the lights, please. Thank you.
MR. JACKSON: May I have just a moment with counsel?
JUDGE CANNONE: Sure.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, may I approach just to retrieve the exhibit?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
MR. JACKSON: And, just for the record, Your Honor, I would ask at this point to strike whatever -- I don’t think there was a whole lot done on that page, but whatever that was did not seem to be --
JUDGE CANNONE: There was an “I don’t know” --
MR. JACKSON: Thank you.
JUDGE CANNONE: So, jurors, disregard that last question.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Directing your attention, Mr. Camerano, to what’s on 157 before you, is that what’s up on the screen now?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, so, my apologies to the Court.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: First of all, we’re on page 157. Who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from J.J. “Are you guys around tonight?”
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And with respect to that next blue bubble, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me. “Katie is working. I’m around. and (c) is going to the Luce to play with a friend.”
MR. LALLY: And what is the Luce play?
MR. CAMERANO: The Luce is an elementary school.
MR. LALLY: And was there a play or something --
MR. CAMERANO: There’s a park down there, activities for kids.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down to the next bubble?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, who it from and what does it say, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: From J.J. “Okay. At the driveway with her now. I’ll text on my way back.”
MR. LALLY: And could that be at the doctor’s?
MR. CAMERANO: Could be.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down to the next bubble?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me to J.J. “Everything okay?”
MR. LALLY: And if you could go down to the next bubble, please.
MR. LALLY: And, again, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from J.J. “Yes. Stupid shit.”
MR. LALLY: Please scroll down to the next bubble.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: -- blank?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
COURT REPORTER: I can’t hear. Thank you.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, Mr. Camerano, the next bubble has no text to it; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman --
JUDGE CANNONE: And now you can move out of the way. Thank you.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: The next green one, again, who is it from, what does it say, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from Johnny. “Just talked to Jen and they both got into Feehan.”
MR. LALLY: And if you could scroll down to the next bubble?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Again, green bubble, who is it from and what does it say, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from Johnny. “Want to drop off and hit the Hillside for a bit?”
MR. LALLY: And what is the Hillside, sir?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s a pub.
MR. LALLY: And where is it located?
MR. CAMERANO: Canton.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down again?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: The blue bubble on the screen, who is that from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me to John. “I probably won’t get to your house until 5:00-5:30.”
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, please scroll down again.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And that green bubble, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from John. “Okay.”
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could just scroll down again?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, again, the blue bubble on the screen, who is it from and what does it say?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from me. “I am leaving in ten.”
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down again?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And the next green bubble, who is it --
MR. CAMERANO: It’s from J.J. “Okay.”
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could scroll down one last time? And that’s fine. Thank you. Ms. Gilman, you can take that down. Your Honor, may I approach just to retrieve?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Mr. Camerano, with regard to your statement in the text as far as leaving now, where were you leaving and where were you going to?
MR. CAMERANO: Leaving my house and going to John’s house.
MR. LALLY: And who, if anyone, was going with you at that time?
MR. CAMERANO: My daughter.
MR. LALLY: And, if you know, approximately what time did you arrive at Mr. O’Keefe’s house?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t.
MR. LALLY: Now, through your friendship with Mr. O’Keefe, did you become familiar with a person named Karen Read?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And how did you become familiar with her and who, if anyone, was she to Mr. O’Keefe as far as you knew?
MR. CAMERANO: John introduced me to her. She was John’s girlfriend.
MR. LALLY: And, just to be clear, do you see Ms. Read in the courtroom today?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Could you just identify as to where she’s seated or an article of clothing that she’s wearing?
MR. CAMERANO: She’s seated right there (Indicating).
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, I’d just ask the record to reflect identification of the defendant by the witness.
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, with regard to Ms. Read, prior to that date of January 28th, 2022, how long had you known Ms. Read?
MR. CAMERANO: A year.
MR. LALLY: Do you recall approximately when you met her?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as you were aware, where Mr. O’Keefe lived, did Ms. Read live there as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. Not full time.
MR. LALLY: So she had a house of her own, as far as you knew?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And about how often on a given week would you see Mr. O’Keefe?
MR. CAMERANO: A couple times.
MR. LALLY: And about how often would you see Ms. Read?
MR. CAMERANO: I would see her also.
MR. LALLY: Now, as far as your relationship with Mr. O’Keefe and/or Ms. Read, would there be occasions where you would see Mr. O’Keefe without Ms. Read?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct, yes.
MR. LALLY: And would there be any occasion where you would see Ms. Read without Mr. O’Keefe?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And where would that be?
MR. CAMERANO: At the house. Maybe at fields.
MR. LALLY: Now, with reference to their relationship, what, if any, conversation did you have with Mr. O’Keefe in regard to his relationship with Ms. Reid?
MR. JACKSON: Objection.
JUDGE CANNONE: Sustained. We need a time frame.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: In the time period around, say, the weeks leading up to January 28th, 2022, what, if any, conversation do you recall having with Mr. O’Keefe in regard to his relationship with Ms. Read?
MR. CAMERANO: Just regular guy conversations.
MR. LALLY: Anything specific that you can recall?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: Now, when you arrived at the house, or typically when you come over to Mr. O’Keefe’s house, where is it that you would park?
MR. CAMERANO: In the driveway, to the right.
MR. LALLY: And is that what you did on this particular day?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: When you arrived at the house, where did you go?
MR. CAMERANO: Into the house.
MR. LALLY: Yourself and your daughter?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, when you got in there, who, if anyone, was at the house at that time?
MR. CAMERANO: and John.
MR. LALLY: And what is it that you did or what is it that occurred while you were in the house?
MR. CAMERANO: Excuse me?
MR. LALLY: What happened in the house?
MR. CAMERANO: We were just congratulating the girls, talking about how good it’s going to be in school, really excited for the girls.
MR. LALLY: And at some point did yourself and Mr. O’Keefe make plans to leave the house?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And where did you go?
MR. CAMERANO: We went down to McCarthy’s.
MR. LALLY: And is that C.F. McCarthy’s?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And is that an establishment? Where is that?
MR. CAMERANO: It’s in Canton Center.
MR. LALLY: About how far away from Mr. O’Keefe’s house is that?
MR. CAMERANO: Five, ten minutes.
MR. LALLY: And is that somewhere that you’re familiar with, you’ve been before?
MR. CAMERANO: Not frequently.
MR. LALLY: Now, with regard to -- do you know approximately what time you left Mr. O’Keefe’s house and went to C.F. McCarthy’s?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t.
MR. LALLY: And where were the girls when the two of you went to C.F. McCarthy’s?
MR. CAMERANO: They were in the house.
MR. LALLY: And, at the time that you left there and went to C.F. McCathy’s, who, if anyone else -- was there any plans as far as meeting anybody else there?
MR. CAMERANO: Was supposed to meet Karen.
MR. LALLY: Now, prior to leaving the house, what, if anything, did you or Mr. O’Keefe do with reference to the vehicles that were in the driveway?
MR. CAMERANO: So, when we were leaving the house, I was parked in the driveway and John was parked on the left side of the driveway. John asked me. I backed up so John could move his car out of the way so Karen could pull his, pull her car into the garage because of the snowstorm.
MR. LALLY: I’m sorry. You said because of what now?
MR. CAMERANO: Snowstorm.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as a snowstorm was concerned, what, if anything, did you know at that point in regard to that?
MR. CAMERANO: We were supposed to get a lot of snow.
MR. LALLY: If I may have just one moment, Your Honor?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, I would ask that Ms. Gilman be allowed to publish a part of Exhibit 6, which is the driveway of the Ring video.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if I could ask for Video No. 145. I’m sorry. If you could pause it right there?
(Whereupon, the video was played and paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Mr. Camerano, do you recognize what’s up on the screen?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And what do you recognize that to be?
MR. CAMERANO: Myself and my daughter.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as --
MR. LALLY: May I approach the witness again, Your Honor?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So just before you here this is a laser pointer. If you just press that button and point it.
MR. CAMERANO: Okay.
MR. LALLY: Mr. Camerano, using that laser pointer that you now have with you, if you could direct the jury’s attention where in this video you see yourself and your daughter?
MR. CAMERANO: (Indicating).
MR. LALLY: And there are two vehicles in this frame; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: If you could use the laser pointer to describe to the jury whose car is whose and where is it?
MR. CAMERANO: The white car is mine. The SUV is John’s.
MR. LALLY: Now, as far as the Ring system that Mr. O’Keefe had at his house at the time, as far as your knowledge of it, what, if anything, would the two of you do with reference to sort of picking up or dropping off kids and the Ring video?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. He had a camera. So I’d like always wave or give, you know -- I always knew that he was like watching.
MR. LALLY: And do you know how it was watching if he wasn’t home?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. On his phone.
MR. LALLY: So would that be sort of a running joke between the two of you?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could play this, please.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could just pause it there briefly.
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, Mr. Camerano, you’re familiar with Mr. O’Keefe’s house. You’ve been there plenty of times; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, with reference to sort of where you and your daughter sort of exited from the screen, what, if any, sort of entrances to the home are located in that area?
MR. CAMERANO: Two garage doors.
MR. LALLY: And are you familiar with that garage area?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Is that typically how you would enter the house?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, with regard to sort of the condition of the garage, was Mr. O’Keefe particular about that?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And how so?
MR. CAMERANO: He always kept things very tidy. He was like OCD.
MR. LALLY: So, as far as -- how many garage doors? And what I mean by garage doors is sort of electronic, you know, up and down.
MR. CAMERANO: So there’s two garage doors that go up and down and there’s a door.
MR. LALLY: And what, if anything, was on the left, as far as the left door?
MR. CAMERANO: There was an old classic car he had, a convertible.
MR. LALLY: And then as far as the right door?
MR. CAMERANO: It was empty.
MR. LALLY: And beyond those sort of bay doors that go up and down, what, if any other, entranceway into the garage was there?
MR. CAMERANO: There’s a side door.
MR. LALLY: And, if you recall, when you were entering at that time on the 28th with your daughter, how did you enter in?
MR. CAMERANO: We went to the garage door, electric door.
MR. LALLY: And was that something -- what, if anything, was affixed to those garage doors as far as security was concerned, beyond the camera?
MR. CAMERANO: A keypad. You have to punch in a key.
MR. LALLY: And at the time or at any time were you familiar with what that passcode was?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Now, when you walk into the garage, how is it that you get from the garage to the house?
MR. CAMERANO: Walk into the garage and you walk up three steps and you go into a door.
MR. LALLY: And then once you sort of walk up the three steps and go into the door, what part of the house are you in when you enter?
MR. CAMERANO: You’re pretty much in the kitchen.
MR. LALLY: And you mentioned that Mr. O’Keefe was meticulous, if not OCD, when it came to the garage. How did that relate to how he kept the house?
MR. CAMERANO: The same. Everything was very tidy. When you walked in the door into the house, to the left you put your shoes. Coats would be hung there.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as shoes were concerned, is that something that you wore inside the house or no?
MR. CAMERANO: He’d rather you not.
MR. LALLY: And that was pretty well-known to people that had been there before; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, from the same exhibit, if I could -- actually, I’m sorry. Your Honor, with regards to the next video that’s not contained on this Exhibit 5, from the same video, I would offer that at this time as the next exhibit.
JUDGE CANNONE: There’s no objection, Mr. Jackson?
MR. JACKSON: No objection.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
(Whereupon, CD of garage area footage of One Meadows Ave. was entered and marked as Exhibit No. 49 in Evidence.)
COURT REPORTER: Exhibit 49.
JUDGE CANNONE: Thank you.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, for the record, this would relate to Exhibit 6 and it’s Video No. 148. And, with the Court’s permission, may I publish that to the jury at this time, Your Honor?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: What was just up on video, sir, just up on the screen as Video No. 148, that was what you had testified to previously as far as moving the cars?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And why was that again?
MR. CAMERANO: So Karen could pull in the driveway, in the garage. Excuse me.
MR. LALLY: Okay. So the expectation from your understanding is that Ms. Read was coming back to the house at Meadows later on that evening?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Now, as Mr. O’Keefe, from that video, on the screen there, was walking to the car did you happen to notice how he was dressed?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as what you observed in that video, what you recall from that evening, is that how he was dressed that evening?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And when I say “how he was dressed,” so for the entirety of the time that you were with him?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: So it’s January 28th. Do you recall -- you indicated there a snowstorm coming. It was cold out; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, with reference to that, was Mr. O’Keefe someone that would typically wear a coat?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: And ever that you can recall?
MR. CAMERANO: Never that I can recall.
MR. LALLY: And, Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, with reference to that same Exhibit 6, if I could publish Video No. 149?
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, from that video, Mr. Camerano, what is it that you and Mr. O’Keefe are doing in that video?
MR. CAMERANO: We’re heading down to McCarthy’s.
MR. LALLY: Now --
JUDGE CANNONE: Do you want the lights on, Mr. Lally?
MR. LALLY: Yes. Thank you.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, at some point after you arrived at C.F. McCarthy’s, who, if anyone, else sort of joins your group?
MR. CAMERANO: Curt.
MR. LALLY: And that would be Curt Roberts; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And how is it that he came to C.F. McCarthy’s that night, if you know?
MR. CAMERANO: I texted him.
MR. LALLY: And, in general terms, do you recall sort of what that text communication was like between yourself and Mr. Roberts?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. He said he was busy, he was doing something, and I texted him he was a pussy.
MR. LALLY: And following that text did Mr. Roberts eventually arrive at C.F. McCarthy’s?
MR. CAMERANO: He showed up, yes.
MR. LALLY: And about how long after you and Mr. O’Keefe arrived did Curt show up?
MR. CAMERANO: I would say maybe an hour.
MR. LALLY: And, if you know, when was it that Ms. -- at some point you indicated Ms. Read appeared at C.F. McCarthy’s as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And do you know about how long after yourself and John arrived that Ms. Read appeared?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t.
MR. LALLY: Now, with reference to that establishment of C.F. McCarthy’s, are you aware or have you become aware that there was surveillance video from inside the bar that night?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And you’ve seen some of that footage; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, may I approach?
JUDGE CANNONE: Yes.
MR. LALLY: The Commonwealth would seek to introduce and admit the surveillance video from C.F. McCarthy’s as the next exhibit.
JUDGE CANNONE: And there’s no objection, Mr. Jackson?
MR. JACKSON: There is not.
(Whereupon, thumb drive with footage from C.F. McCarthy’s was entered and marked as Exhibit No. 50 in Evidence.)
COURT REPORTER: Exhibit 50, 5-0.
JUDGE CANNONE: Thank you.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, I would seek to publish portions of that video for the jury at this time.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could from that video, the first -- yes, the first video -- if I could ask you to play from about 7 minutes and 40 seconds and we’ll go through 9 minutes or so.
(Whereupon, the video was being played.)
MR. LALLY: If you could pause it just there?
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, do you recognize what’s up on the screen, Mr. Camerano?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And what do you recognize that to be?
MR. CAMERANO: C.F. McCarthy’s.
MR. LALLY: And yourself and Mr. O’Keefe are not in the frame at this time; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: If you could, using the laser pointer before you, if you could direct the jury’s attention to where it was about in reference to the bar that you and Mr. O’Keefe eventually came to congregate that evening?
MR. CAMERANO: These seats here (Indicating).
MR. LALLY: And, from this video, from your time there that night or prior occasions, can you see where the front door is to the establishment?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Could you direct the jury’s attention to where that is?
MR. CAMERANO: (Indicating).
MR. LALLY: And, so, what I’m going to ask in just a moment, wait for Ms. Gilman to press play, and then what I’d ask you to do is if you could just direct the jury’s attention to when, if at all, you observe yourself and Mr. O’Keefe walk in.
MR. CAMERANO: Okay.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could?
(Whereupon, the video was being played.)
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could pause it right there?
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, I’m sorry, Mr. Camerano, you’re directing the laser pointer. If you could just describe what you’re directing the --
MR. CAMERANO: That is me and that is John.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could just play this through?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: And, Your Honor, for the record, I think we’re at about 9 minutes and 41 seconds or so.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, with reference to C.F. McCarthy’s, you went there and had some drinks; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall what you were drinking or what John was drinking that night?
MR. CAMERANO: Beer.
MR. LALLY: And was that sort of typical for the two of you?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall, sort of, was that from the tap or bottle or something else?
MR. CAMERANO: From the bottle.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall what type of beer typically you would drink or Mr. O’Keefe would drink?
MR. CAMERANO: Bud Light.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall specifically that’s what you had that night, or that’s just what you would typically have?
MR. CAMERANO: Typically, I think we had Bud Light.
MR. LALLY: And, if you know, approximately how many beers or how many drinks did you have over the course of your time at C.F. McCarthy’s that night?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t.
MR. LALLY: As far as yourself versus Mr. O’Keefe, do you recall sort of in relation to each other how much you each had to drink?
MR. CAMERANO: Maybe six beers.
MR. LALLY: And what I’m asking, sir, it’s not like did one of you have 10 and one of you have two, or was it sort of commensurate with each other?
MR. CAMERANO: Commensurate. One for one.
MR. LALLY: Okay. So, essentially, you’re buying rounds as you go along?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Now, from your time at C.F. McCarthy’s, how would you describe sort of the tone or sort of the demeanor within the group that you were in then?
MR. CAMERANO: Pretty good.
MR. LALLY: So no arguments, no fighting, anything like that within your group?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: And just briefly going back to the clothing that you observed Mr. O’Keefe wearing in this and that you recall him wearing that night, what, if any, damage or tears or anything like that did you note in any of his clothing that night?
MR. CAMERANO: I did not see any.
MR. LALLY: Now, Ms. Gilman, if I could ask you to take this down and go to the third video, and, Ms. Gilman, if I could direct your attention to the 6 minute and 10 second mark up through the 7 minute mark. When you get to six ten, would you just pause it, please?
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, Mr. Camerano, directing your attention to the screen, if you could, from the point -- or, you know, within your group that night at the bar, if you could just direct the jury’s attention to who was who and who, if anyone, you recognize in the video?
MR. CAMERANO: Curt.
MR. LALLY: So, in addition to yourself and Mr. O’Keefe, Mr. Roberts has now joined your group?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could, just play it from there?
(Whereupon, the video was being played.)
MR. LALLY: If you could pause there, please.
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, referring to Mr. Roberts, is he a beer drinker as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: From a bottle that night, same sort of thing that yourself and Mr. O’Keefe were having?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, from where it’s paused at this point in the video, who, if anyone else, do you recognize who are coming into frame or coming to join your group?
MR. CAMERANO: Karen Read.
MR. LALLY: So, from this, is this about the time that she entered the establishment or came into the bar?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Now, with reference to Ms. Read, what, if anything, do you recall her drinking during your time that you were both at C.F. McCarthy’s that night?
MR. CAMERANO: She was drinking out of a glass.
MR. LALLY: And, if you know, what, if anything, did you observe as far as the color of what was in the glass?
MR. CAMERANO: It was clear.
MR. LALLY: And beyond sort of the clear liquid in the glass, what, if anything else, did you observe in the glass, as far as a straw, fruit, anything like that?
MR. CAMERANO: A straw, I believe.
MR. LALLY: And what, if anything -- did you know what was in the glass?
MR. CAMERANO: I didn’t.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as you could tell, what was in the glass?
MR. CAMERANO: Vodka?
MR. LALLY: And is that something that Ms. Read would typically drink if you had been out with her on a prior occasion?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And I’m sorry to keep jumping back and forth between, but, Ms. Gilman, if you could just hit play again and play it to the seven minute mark?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: Thank you. Now, Ms. Gilman, from this same third video in this exhibit of the C.F. McCarthy’s, if I could ask you to forward to the 14-minute mark and pause that. And, if you could, I would ask that you play this from the 14- minute mark until about 14 minutes and 15 seconds, so just about 15 seconds.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, you can take that down, if you want.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, Mr. Camerano, you indicated that your son was at Luce Elementary School for a play of some sort; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: He was for a little bit.
MR. LALLY: And from there where, if anywhere else, did he go that evening?
MR. CAMERANO: He went to a friend’s house to skate in his backyard.
MR. LALLY: Skate as far as just skating, or what, if anything else, was he doing?
MR. CAMERANO: He was skating, like a little party.
MR. LALLY: Well, let me ask you this. Was he a hockey player?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes, he’s a hockey player.
MR. LALLY: Okay. So, when you say skating, he’s in the backyard --
MR. CAMERANO: Skating, yes. Makeshift hockey rink in somebody’s backyard.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And at some point -- at some point with relation to that, what, if anything, sort of caused you to leave C.F. McCarthy’s on that night?
MR. CAMERANO: I received a phone call that my son was hit in the face with a hockey stick and he lost his tooth.
MR. LALLY: And, so, upon receiving that call where did you go?
MR. CAMERANO: I went to go get him.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall about what time that was that you left C.F. McCarthy’s to go get him?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t recall.
MR. LALLY: Now, from the group that you were with, as far as yourself, Mr. O’Keefe, Ms. Read and Mr. Roberts, who, if anyone, left first?
MR. CAMERANO: I believe Curt.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall sort of how it was that Curt left?
MR. CAMERANO: Curt just got up and left.
MR. LALLY: So sort of an Irish goodbye --
MR. CAMERANO: Irish goodbye, yes.
MR. LALLY: Is that something he’s known for?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And about when was that in relation to when you left?
MR. CAMERANO: Not too soon after.
MR. LALLY: I’m sorry. Not too soon after or not too soon before?
MR. CAMERANO: I left after, probably like, say, 15 minutes after Curt left.
MR. LALLY: Okay.
MR. LALLY: Now, with the Court’ permission, Your Honor, I’d just like to publish just two more brief segments from this.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: So, Ms. Gilman, if I could direct your attention to the fourth video and if I could ask you to forward it to about 19 minutes and 40 seconds and if you could play it from there.
(Whereupon, the video was being played.)
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if I could ask you to just pause it there for one second.
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, Mr. Camerano, looking at the surveillance video here and both from your memory of that night, you see Mr. O’Keefe speaking to another gentleman; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And do you know who that person is?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And who is that person?
MR. CAMERANO: Sully.
MR. LALLY: And do you know his first name or anything beyond just Sully?
MR. CAMERANO: Sully. I don’t know his first name.
MR. LALLY: And how is it that you -- how is it that you know him?
MR. CAMERANO: Our kids play baseball with his son.
MR. LALLY: So, in addition to your son playing baseball with Mr. O’Keefe’s nephew, Mr. Roberts, does he have a son that’s around the same age?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And this individual, Sully, he has a child that plays baseball with the three of your kids?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Is that someone that you had contacted to meet there or he just happened to be there?
MR. CAMERANO: He just happened to be there.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could just hit play again and just run it from that 20 minute mark?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: Now, Ms. Gilman, if you could move that forward again to 24 minutes and 10 seconds and if you could just let this run until about 24 minutes and 20 seconds, so just about 10 seconds or so.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: So, Mr. Camerano, did you see yourself in that portion of the video?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And do you know what you were doing at that time?
MR. CAMERANO: Leaving.
MR. LALLY: And, so, prior to leaving had you sort of settled up a tab or something?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes, I picked up the tab.
MR. LALLY: And then you left and went to get your son; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, you can take that down, please.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, Mr. Camerano, you left there and went to pick up your son; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And following picking up your son, where did you go from there?
MR. CAMERANO: Back to John’s house.
MR. LALLY: And why did you go back to John’s house at that time?
MR. CAMERANO: My daughter was there, picking her up.
MR. LALLY: So you went to pick up your daughter?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And do you recall approximately what time that was?
MR. CAMERANO: 11:00.
MR. LALLY: And, when you came back to the residence of One Meadows, you parked in the driveway again?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And did you physically sort of go in the house to pick up your daughter?
MR. CAMERANO: No, I didn’t. No, I did not.
MR. LALLY: Now, as far as from the time that you -- it’s from the time that you left with Mr. O’Keefe to C.F. McCarthy’s versus the time that you came back. Anything change as far as position of Mr. O’Keefe’s car?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: What, if anything, did you note as far as the garage doors were concerned or any damage or anything like that?
MR. CAMERANO: Everything looked normal.
MR. LALLY: And, Your Honor, with the Court’s permission, I would seek to just publish another video or two from Exhibit 6.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: And at this time, Ms. Gilman, if I could have from the driveway again Video 152?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, you can stop there.
(Whereupon, the video was paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Now, from that video, 152, that was just up on the screen, sir, can you describe for the jury just as sort of what was going on in that video?
MR. CAMERANO: I was picking up my daughter, . And my son --
MR. LALLY: You were with your son?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. All three of us.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And where did you go from there?
MR. CAMERANO: Home.
MR. LALLY: And when you got home -- well, let me ask you this first. During the time that you were at C.F. McCarthy’s, you obviously -- I’m assuming at some point -- you didn’t do an Irish goodbye?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: Okay. So at some point you indicated to Mr. O’Keefe and/or Ms. Read that you were leaving to go pick up your son?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And what, if any, indication did they give to you as far as where they were going or what were their intentions for the rest of the evening?
MR. CAMERANO: They were heading either across the street or to the Hillside.
MR. LALLY: And, when you say “across the street,” what, if anything, was across the street?
MR. CAMERANO: There’s another barroom.
MR. LALLY: Is that the Waterfall?
MR. CAMERANO: The Waterfall, yes.
MR. LALLY: Are you familiar with that establishment as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And where is that in relation to C.F. McCarthy’s?
MR. CAMERANO: Across the street, to the left, if you were coming out of C.F. McCarthy’s.
MR. LALLY: Walking distance; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And you leave, you get your son, you pick up your daughter at Mr. O’Keefe’s house, and then you go home; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, when you get home, about how much longer were you up before you went to bed?
MR. CAMERANO: I wasn’t up much longer.
MR. LALLY: And, when you typically go to bed, what, if anything, do you do with your phone?
MR. CAMERANO: Put them on a charger.
MR. LALLY: Where is the charger located in reference to the bed?
MR. CAMERANO: In the kitchen.
MR. LALLY: And, following to the next day, about what time is it that you wake up on the 29th?
MR. CAMERANO: 6:00. 5:30, 6:00 a.m.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And what was it that woke you up, if you know?
MR. CAMERANO: Phones ringing.
MR. LALLY: And how many phones do you have?
MR. CAMERANO: Two.
MR. LALLY: And potentially one personal, one work; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: Okay. And were both phones ringing or one ringing?
MR. CAMERANO: One phone at that time.
MR. LALLY: And was that your work or your personal?
MR. CAMERANO: My personal phone.
MR. LALLY: And you get up. You hear that. You look at your phone. What, if anything, do you see on the screen to the phone?
MR. CAMERANO: I see a lot of missed calls, a bunch of missed calls from Karen and missed calls from my wife’s work.
MR. LALLY: And, when you say “missed calls,” are we talking about one call, several calls?
MR. CAMERANO: Several calls.
MR. LALLY: Any voicemails that you recall associated with those calls?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t recall.
MR. LALLY: So based on sort of making that observation of the missed calls, what do you do at that point?
MR. CAMERANO: I pick up the phone and call my wife.
MR. LALLY: And what, if anything, did you learn from your wife at that time?
MR. CAMERANO: My wife said to me that John --
MR. JACKSON: Objection.
JUDGE CANNONE: Sustained.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, may we approach?
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
(Whereupon, there was a sidebar conference as follows:)
MR. LALLY: So, Your Honor, I'm not seeking this for the truth of the matter asserted, essentially, the impact on Mr. Camerano. So he gets a call from his wife, which would have been the case that she got a call from the defendant, didn't know where John was. So based on that, he was then directed by his wife to go to Meadows Ave. and pick up . His wife, who is the very next witness, will testify to that, as well. So I don't know what the harm is as far as him summarizing in general why he went to One Meadows Ave. particularly.
MR. JACKSON: Based on that, I don't have any objection.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
(Whereupon, the sidebar conference concluded.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: Mr. Camerano, you call your wife and what, if anything, is it in general that she tells you?
MR. CAMERANO: She tells me that John didn’t come home last night.
MR. LALLY: And she’s still at work at this point; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And did she indicate to you how she came to find that out?
MR. CAMERANO: She said she received phone calls.
MR. LALLY: From whom did she --
MR. CAMERANO: From Karen.
MR. LALLY: From Karen. Okay. And then, based on that, you have a conversation with your wife about John’s niece and nephew; is that right?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. My wife says to me go get, go get , is home.
MR. LALLY: So at that time your wife tells you that is home at Meadows Ave. by herself?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, so, based on that information what is it that you do next?
MR. CAMERANO: I realize that is home alone, so I throw some clothes on, go out to the car, clean the car off real quick, and get in the car and go.
MR. LALLY: When you say “clean the car off real quick,” what, if anything, did you have to clean off?
MR. CAMERANO: I cleaned the snow off the front windshield.
MR. LALLY: And, again, you sort of drive over to John’s house to get ?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, when you get there, do you pull in the driveway as well?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And, when you get to John’s house and you pull in the driveway, what, if anything, did you observe about sort of the condition of the garage doors at that point?
MR. CAMERANO: When I pulled in, I could tell the door, the garage door was open, left open.
MR. LALLY: Which one? The one to the right or to the --
MR. CAMERANO: The one to the right.
MR. LALLY: And do you go inside that door?
MR. CAMERANO: I do.
MR. LALLY: And what, if anything, did you do once you went inside?
MR. CAMERANO: Once I went inside, I saw . I asked get whatever she needed and to come and get in the car. While she was doing that, I started clearing some snow. I thought maybe the snow hit the sensors so that the door couldn’t go down.
MR. LALLY: And, so, you start clearing the snow with a shovel?
MR. CAMERANO: With the shovel that was in the garage, yes.
MR. LALLY: And after you had cleared some of the snow with the shovel, what did you do with regard to the doors at that point?
MR. CAMERANO: So I tried to put them down. It wouldn’t go down. Then I asked , I think, to reenter the code to see if she could get the doors to go down. The doors would not go down, the door.
MR. LALLY: And at some point did you -- how did you get the --
MR. CAMERANO: So I manually -- there’s a red rope. I manually pulled that, shut the door, locked the doors. There’s two side locks on the garage door. And I went out through the side garage door.
MR. LALLY: Now, when you arrived at the residence and you pulled into the driveway, do you recall how many vehicles were in the driveway when you got there?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And how many?
MR. CAMERANO: Two.
MR. LALLY: And whose vehicles were they?
MR. CAMERANO: John’s and Karen’s.
MR. LALLY: And, John’s vehicle, was that -- where was that in relation to the last time that you saw it when you picked up your daughter there?
MR. CAMERANO: The same spot.
MR. LALLY: And, as far as the defendant Ms. Read’s vehicle, where was that in relation to the garage or in relation to the driveway?
MR. CAMERANO: It was pulled in on the left side, all the way in.
MR. LALLY: And, so, in the area of the garage door that you were just speaking about?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And at that time did you look at the vehicle or touch the vehicle in any way?
MR. CAMERANO: No. No.
MR. LALLY: Fair to say that your focus was sort on the garage door and the fact that it was open; correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And why was that? It may be self-evident, but why was your focus on the garage door?
MR. CAMERANO: Because I figured John would go crazy when he came home and all the snow was in his garage.
MR. LALLY: Now, at any point in time when you initially got the call from your wife did you yourself reach out to John at any point?
MR. CAMERANO: I did not.
MR. LALLY: Your Honor, if I may, I would just seek to publish a few more videos from Exhibit 6, the driveway Ring.
JUDGE CANNONE: Okay.
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if I could have from those first starting with Video 155. And, essentially, it’s going to go 155 through 158. If you could pause that, please.
(Whereupon, the video was played and paused.)
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, Mr. Camerano, you recognize what’s up on the screen again?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes. My car.
MR. LALLY: And is this sort of when you’re pulling in to get ?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And using the laser pointer before you again, if you could direct the jury’s attention to where you observed Ms. Read’s vehicle?
MR. CAMERANO: (Indicating.)
MR. LALLY: And is that essentially, from what you observed there, that’s where it was the entirety of the time that you were there?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: So nobody else came to the home during the time that you were there to pick up and shoveling out the snow from the garage?
MR. CAMERANO: No.
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, if you could just run it through?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: And, Ms. Gilman, if you could play the next video, 156?
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, play Video 157.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: And lastly, Ms. Gilman, Video 158.
(Whereupon, the video was played.)
MR. LALLY: Ms. Gilman, you can take that down.
BY MR. LALLY:
MR. LALLY: And, so, Mr. Camerano, what was just in those last four videos that were played before the jury, is that essentially the process that you were describing as far as yourself and trying to get the garage door down?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct.
MR. LALLY: And, so, you leave from there and go back to your house; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: And where do sort of you and go once you get inside?
MR. CAMERANO: We go into the house. We’re in the kitchen in my house. And I get my daughter up.
MR. LALLY: And your daughter then sort of hangs out with for a period of time?
MR. CAMERANO: Correct. They go downstairs and they’re hanging out.
MR. LALLY: And at some point in time how does leave your house, or where does she go from there?
MR. CAMERANO: I take home.
MR. LALLY: And why is it that you take home? About what time is it, if you know?
MR. CAMERANO: I don’t know what time. Paul had called me.
MR. LALLY: By “Paul,” who do you mean?
MR. CAMERANO: Paul O’Keefe, John’s brother.
MR. LALLY: And he informed you that John passed?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: So you took to the house on Meadows Ave. to be with her family; is that correct?
MR. CAMERANO: Yes.
MR. LALLY: Thank you very much, sir. I have nothing further, Your Honor.
JUDGE CANNONE: Mr. Jackson.
