McCarthy's is the Canton bar where John O'Keefe met Karen Read on the evening of January 28, 2022 — the first stop before the Waterfall and 34 Fairview Road.[1] Michael Camerano testified that the couple greeted each other affectionately: "They kissed."[2] A $52.80 tab opened under Read's name, paid with O'Keefe's MasterCard, listed Tito's Vodka; Bukhenik described Read leaving McCarthy's holding a tall cylindrical glass.[3] The bar's surveillance video was introduced in the first trial[4] and authenticated and admitted in the retrial.[5]
McCarthy's is the start of the prosecution's alcohol-consumption timeline. Bukhenik testified that the video showed "nine drinks being consumed by the defendant" from Read's arrival at McCarthy's through her departure from the Waterfall.[6] Knowles testified that the estimated blood-alcohol concentration at 12:45 a.m. could range from 0.14% to 0.28%.[7]
